Ginny Burton spoke candidly to the club in March 2023 where she gave a first-hand account of a life trapped in the downward spiral of addiction and crime. After hitting absolute bottom she reclaimed her life and started over as few can or will on their own. She attended and graduated from UW. Now thirteen years in recovery, she brings a perspective that few policy experts can claim. She has lived on both sides of the systems she now works to transform.
Burton has just published her third book, "The Gabriel Plan, 10 Points to Recover Our Nation." Crucial decisions are being made right now in Whatcom County and Olympia about incarceration and treatment that may be headed in the wrong direction.
A few key quotes from the new book: "Here's what becomes obvious when you look at the numbers over time: the system was not designed to solve addiction. It was built to manage it. Profitably. Perpetually. A recovered addict is a lost customer." and "This isn't conspiracy thinking... Industries want to grow ...expand their markets ...develop new products ..."
Those following the news know that drug-use accommodation is growing, no matter how devastating the consequences may be for individuals. Anyone wondering about the wholesomeness and wisdom of local and state programs, including the role of incarceration in breaking the addiction cycle, shouldn't miss this program.
At UW Burton was named Truman Scholar and Martin Honor Scholar, and her professional background includes roles at Catholic Community Services as Women's Advocate, Certified Peer Counselor, and Care Manager Supervisor. She's now the Executive Director of the organization she founded (OUT Impact Coalition).
Club members' guests are always welcome - bring a friend, business associate, or neighbor. The doors will open officially at 11:30 am.
