Donald G. Hansey
Former Board Member
On Good Friday, April 3, 2015, prior Northwest Business Club board member, Republican of long service, loyal friend, and mentor to many, Don Hansey, passed away peacefully. Don was surrounded by family at Hospice House where he moved on March 21, after suffering a severe stroke.
Don will be remembered above all for his faithful service to God, family, country, and to his community. A Whatcom County native with roots in our agricultural heritage, Don’s early career centered on his family-owned business, the Birchwood Farms chicken and eggs hatchery. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was elected as Washington State Representative in the 42nd district from 1971 to 1973 and in the 40th district from 1973 to 1977.
In 1977, Don was elected to the Whatcom County Board of Freeholders and chaired the Board which drafted our County Home Rule Charter prior to its adoption by the voters in 1978. Later, he was elected as a County Councilmember, where he served three terms from 1979 until 1992.
Don and his wife, Ginger, were active members of the Birchwood Presbyterian Church, as well as numerous civic organizations. Perhaps one of his favorite activities was volunteering to serve the WCRP, where he mentored many blessed to have worked with him on countless Party committees. Until late 2014, when he and Ginger moved from Ferndale to The Willows assisted living facility in Bellingham, Don loved being a PCO, and rarely missed a meeting or event. He was honored by the WCRP as Republican of the Year in 2007, and was awarded our Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 WCRP Lincoln Day Event.
A memorial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Greenacres, 5700 Northwest Road (at Axton Rd) in Ferndale.
