George Edward Mason
1/4/26 - 4/12/13 - Board Member, Program Chairman
George Edward Mason, LCDR, USN, Retired, aged 87, of Bellingham, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013. A Celebration of George’s life with reception was be held on Friday, May 10, 2013.
George was born to George L. and Lillian Mason on January 4, 1926, in Springfield, Missouri. As part of the Navy V12 College Training Program to supplement its force of commissioned officers, he attended Park College in Missouri and then Northwestern University in Illinois. He graduated from this program near the end of WWII as one of the youngest Ensigns in the US Navy.
George married the late Margaret Ann Riggins in 1945. During their 55 year marriage, they lived in numerous places in the US and Japan. He served in the US Navy for 22 years and retired as a Lieutenant Commander, and then settled his family in Bellingham, in 1965. His last duty station had been as Commandant of the Bellingham Naval Reserve Training Center. Following his Navy service, he had a long career as a banker for Seattle First National Bank. He had been an active contributing member to many organizations in Whatcom County. These included the American Legion, United Way, the Lions Club, the Navy League and the Northwest Business Club. He had been president of the United Way and of the Northwest Business Club. George believed strongly that it was a citizen’s duty to serve his community.
George traveled extensively in the USA, Asia and Europe. He loved to tell stories about his travels, especially those based on his experiences in the Navy. His interests were wide and varied. He was a passionate reader and continued a life of learning until his passing. He made it a habit to walk every day with his son David in the local parks. He enjoyed attending events at the Mt. Baker Theater, as well as musical performances at Western Washington University.
For decades, his Letters to the Editor appeared in the Bellingham Herald, where George would refer to “Uncle Henry” when expressing his opinions, which were often challenging and witty.
George is survived by three children: David Mason of Bellingham, Beth Ann Mason of Auburn, WA and Rebecca Mason of Philadelphia. His wife, Margaret Ann, passed away in 2000 and daughter Cynthia Mason died in 1992. He was survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
